Catalog description:  An intensive course designed to prepare students for mathematics courses such as Calculus with Applications to Business and Economics, and Precalculus.  It covers selected algebra topics including exponents, rational expressions, polynomials, radicals, relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations.

Pre-requisite:  MAT016 (grade of “C” or better) or MAT060 (grade of “C” or better) or equivalent.

Text:  Lial, Hornsby, Schneider, College Algebra, 10th ed.— (Pearson Addison Wesley, 2009).

Supplementary materials:  Beverly Fusfield, Student’s Solutions Manual; Digital Video Tutor (CD-ROM); access to MyMathLab.  Tutoring is available in the Math Center. Students may use their own calculators.

Supplemental tutoring (including videotapes) is available through the Math Center.  Check the Center for hours.

Each weekly class will consist of 2-3/4 hours of instruction with a 10-minute break.  Attendance is strongly recommended, will be taken at the beginning (and if necessary at the resumption) of the class, and will affect your grade.  Please don’t be late.

Grading policy: Your final grade (A, B, C, D, F) depends on more than just passing or failing the final exam.  Do not think you can ignore homework, attendance and quizzes and pass the course on the final exam alone.  On the other hand, if you do not pass the final exam, it is unlikely that you will pass the course.

Four Tests (approximately 45 minutes apiece) will count for 50% of your final grade. (Makeup quizzes may be arranged only when exceptional reasons prevent you from taking the quiz as scheduled.  You must provide a written explanation of the reason and all quizzes must be made up prior to the next class session.)  Homework, attendance, class participation – total 15%.  Final Exam 35%.

Honesty policy: Cheating on a quiz or the final exam may be punishable in the discretion of the instructor by confiscation of the quiz or the final exam and the entry of a grade of zero (0), or, in extreme cases, by referral to the Dean of Students for appropriate discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct up to and including expulsion.

Students are expected to adhere to the policies of the County College of Morris.  These can be accessed at www.ccm.edu/policies.shtml
